BC’s Extended Pool Season

June 24, 2011
With the mildness of BC’s West Coast weather, what better than an above ground pool to invigorate and enliven your family’s leisure moments?
We recommend that you carefully plan your impending above ground pool purchase. One of the best ways of selecting a model that meets your needs is to first consider the factors listed below.

1 – Site   Measure the available land surface on which you plan to install your aboveground pool. This will immediately provide you with a good idea of the type and size of pool that will best fit into the existing landscape of your yard. If the ground where you are planning to install your pool is sloped, opt for a smaller structure so as to decrease the necessary site preparation work.

2- Preferences   Certain questions concerning your tastes and needs will help you make appropriate choices regarding to your aboveground pool:
· Does the pool’s appearance take precedence over its usefulness?
· Is there a specific type of pool or material that you prefer?
· What will the pool be for? Recreation while at the cottage? Children’s games? Fitness training?

3- Budget     What is your planned budget for purchasing a pool that meets your needs in terms of comfort, durability and appearance?

4- Installing your pool   If you use the services of a professional installation company, plan for some time between the purchase and installation of your aboveground pool. The waiting period will be somewhat longer if you purchase your pool during the summer.  If you plan to install your aboveground pool yourself, we recommend you get at least two other people to help you. For a smoother installation, opt for a sunny day where there is no wind, and prepare the ground adequately ahead of time.  The time needed to assemble the pool will vary according to the pool size and model. Excluding the time necessary to prepare the ground and fill the pool with water, installing a round pool should take about three-five hours, an oval-shaped pool six-eight hours. This generous estimate is provided you are well prepared, have help and are not frustrated easily.

Close or Winterize Your Pool (no algaecide option), protect your investments :)

August 30, 2010

If you can’t use your pool during winter months, protect your investments and shut down the pool completely. Closing your pool properly makes next season’s start up easy and avoids time-consuming clean up and costly repairs. **Scroll to the bottom of this post for recommendations on just a partial close–since some of us prefer not to deal with the slimy mess that can end up on your winter cover…

  WINTERIZING YOUR POOL

1) Bring a water sample to ENGLISH & LEPAGE to find out what is needed to balance your water and insure there are no irregularities.

    a) Adjust the alkalinity to 80-150 ppm.

    b) Adjust pH to 7.2-7.6

   c) Adjust calcium hardness to 150-280 ppm

   d) Ensure sanitizer is at correct level (A green pool will need to be cleared before winterizing)

2) Physically clean the pool. Brush the sides down and vacuum the bottom.  Empty out the skimmer basket(s) and the pump’s hair trap.

3) A shock treatment (HiberShock or Smartshock) is necessary to oxidize any disolved organic material that physical cleaning and filtration could not remove.

4) Add METALfree directly to pool.

5) Add Pool Magic+PHOSfree through the skimmer with pump on. **Run pump and filter for 24 hours before continuing with next step.

6) Partially drain the pool to about 3-4″ below the skimmer.  Drain/blowout all lines and plug outlets.  Unscrew and remove directional ball from center and each outlet and plug with winterizing plug.  Remove both baskets- skimmer and pump.

7) Install cover over your pool and tie-down or secure it with water bags around the full perimeter to prevent debris and wind from going under the cover.  This should also help to prevent wind damage to your winter cover.

WINTERIZING YOUR FILTER–

1) Drain the sand filter by opening all plugs, (as well as the two plugs on the pump) and turn the sand filter handle to winterize to aid drainage. Make sure to store plugs in a safe place-as with the pump and skimmer baskets.

2) Remove pressure guages and store inside.

3) Leave all gate valves three-quarters open (except in basement installations).

WINTERIZING YOUR HEATER–Drain and evacuate water from interior lines, refill lines with appropriate anti-freeze.

PARTIAL WINTER CLOSINGSome people prefer not to completely shut down their pool. In this case you must keep pool balanced (alka, pH and calcium) and the filtration system is kept running, even if only a few hours a day. In the event of temperatures dropping below freezing, the filtration system should be kept on full time to prevent the pipes from freezing.

Want to use solar to heat your swimming pool?

July 1, 2010

HOW DOES A SOLAR HEATING SYSTEM WORK?

-Connect your existing pool pump to the solar panel.
-Your pool pump sends cold water to the solar panel.
-The sun heats the water in the solar panel.
-Warm water is then returned to your swimming pool.

HOW WELL DOES SOLAR HEATING WORK?

A solar heating system if sized and installed properly will raise
your pool water temperature up to 100 F / 60 C and extend
your swimming season. In order to maximize the heat,
the solar panel must be exposed to sunlight as long
as possible. On rainy days and at night the
solar panel must be turned off so your pool water
doesn’t cool, opening a diverter does this.
On cloudy days, the solar panel won’t work as well.
It is recommended to use a solar blanket or a Liquid Solar Blanket,
this will help keep more of the heat generated by the solar panel in your pool.

IS A SPECIAL PUMP REQUIRED?

If your panel is on the ground beside your pool,
you can use your existing pool pump as long as it is in good working
condition. A 1HP pump will handle a panel placed up to
9 meters (30 ft)away from your pool and no more than one story up.

SOLAR PANEL PLACEMENT / LOCATION

The solar panel can be placed on the ground. Avoid placing in high traffic areas, as it is not
recommended to walk on the solar panel. The solar panel can also be mounted on a rack or a roof.
When mounted, the panel should preferably be facing south and be inclined at a 30 to 45 degree angle. Don’t face the panel North, because it will not heat. A mounting kit is required for placing the solar panel on a rack or roof.

Solar Covers for your Pool – Blue or Clear?

October 8, 2008

The purpose of a solar blanket is to allow the MAXIMUM amount of sun’s rays to penetrate to the greatest depths of your pool. In tests, the clear cover has been shown to be the most effective method for providing passive solar heating in your pool. Reduces Evaporation: Stopping evaporation is the way ALL solar covers keep heat in the pool. The thicker cover also provides maximum insulation value on cool days and at night.

Close your Pool this Winter

September 30, 2008

Closing your pool properly makes next years’ start up easy and avoids expensive clean up and repairs. If you can’t use your pool during the winter months, you should protect your investments and shut down the pool completely.
Follow This Easy Guide:
1. Bring a water sample to English & Lepage or your nearest pool dealer to find out what is needed to balance your water and insure there are no irregularities.
2. Adjust the alkalinity to 80 – 150 ppm.
3. Adjust the p.H to 7.2 – 7.6
4. Adjust calcium hardness to 150 – 280 ppm.
5. Add a sequestrian (Stain & Scale) agent to guard against metal stains and bathtub-ring during the winter.
6. Physically clean the pool. Brush the pool sides and vacuum the bottom. Clean out the skimmer basket and the pump’s hair trap. Store both the baskets.
7. Shock treatment (HiberShock) is necessary to oxidize any dissolved organic material that physical cleaning and filtration could not remove. Run the pump and filter for a few hours to insure thorough distribution. For extra protection a floating chlorinator can be used.
8. Because the fall temperatures are unpredictable, it is recommended that an algaecide (Banish) be used to protect the pool from algae growth. When the filtration system is not operating, algae can take over very quickly.
9. Partially drain the pool to about 3 – 4” below the bottom of the skimmer. Drain / blowout all lines and plug all outlets. Unscrew and remove directional ball from centre and each outlet and plug with a winterizing plug.
10. Install cover over your pool and secure it with water bags around the full perimeter to prevent debris and wind from going under the cover. The bags also prevent the cover from the wind damage.

***Some people prefer not to completely shut down their pool. In this case the filtration system is kept running, in some cases only a few hours a day. In the event of the temperature dropping below freezing, the filtration system should be kept on full time to prevent the pipes from freezing.***

WINTERIZING YOUR FILTER
1. Drain the filter by opening all plugs also the two plugs on the pump – turn handle to winterize to aid drainage. Store plugs in a safe place such as the hair and lint basket.
2. Remove the pressure gauges and store inside.
3. Leave all gate valves three quarters open (except in basement installations).
